Farletta's recovery period is almost over...just 3 more days until she gets to go out in the big pasture with her friends! I removed her suture today and she looks great. I can't believe how beautifully she healed! All the swelling is gone and the shape of her face is normal and symetrical. I'll have more pictures soon!

Did your horse have the silicon ball put in the eye socket to give it a more natural look? My horse had a conjunctival flap done to try and heal an ulcer but it didn't work and the eye had to be removed. He had a considerable amount of swelling (fluid build up is what the vet says) and it's been 12 days since his surgery. The lid doesn't seem to be too tender to touch but the amount of swelling I'm seeing compared to your pictures is very concerning to me. It looks like there is a hand ball in there, not a silicon ball that was the same size as his eye.

Enucleation is the surgical removal of the entire eye. Evisceration is the surgical removal of the contents of the eye, leaving the white part of the eye and the eye muscles intact.

Enucleation is what Farletta received. It is also the procedure Dana is asking about. Evisceration is not an effective procedure for horses with ERU, (at least not at the time Farletta had her procedure, almost 10 years ago, I suppose things may have changed since then).
