I've put her back to work again, stepping up from simply longeing her. Show season may be a bust this year though...time and money are not things I have an abundance of. I also fear signing up for a non-refundable show only to discover the night before that she is in flare-up and can't go.
Farletta continues to look good. Her eye is comfortable and she looks absolutely fabulous all shiny and dappled out. Farletta has attained celebrity Princess status at the boarding stable ever since I showed an employee her Princess tiara! Now she gets to wear it frequently to show other visitors just how special she is! She is really enjoying the attention.

The recent flare ups have created more cataract in the eye. From my view (with my naked eye), the cataract is easily double what it was at this time last year. It looks kind of like cloudy blobs in her eye but is still only showing on the inside and is seen in the pupil area. I can't tell without a optic scope if she can still see through any part of the cataract. She definately still has vision in the eye though.
So, what does all this mean? I don't know, I'm not the vet. I crave answers -- I want to understand everything but I can't have all the answers...they're simply not available to me. I am considering a check-up appointment with Dr. Shaarda to see where we stand right now but this involves hauling Farletta for an hour (one way) which is fine if there is information to gain but will suck if Dr. Shaarda can only say..."yup, that looks bigger to me". What to do.... Well, Farletta has been off meds since Sunday May 15th. She is looking good today and her eye is responding normally to light again.
I can't believe how fantastic she looks this year as compared to last year! I've cut her feed back again today (from 4# concentrate to 2# daily). That is less than half of what she was "being fed" last year at this time and she is easily a couple hundred pounds heavier. Miracle metabolism or better feeding program? All I know for sure is it is such a relief to not have to worry so much about my girl! So, what's next? My schedule (grad school, etc.) has given me very little time to spend with Farletta. I hate that we never do anything anymore and though I know the time apart will enable us to spend more time together in the future, it is hard to spend so much time away from her now. I feel like I'm missing out on "her best years" although I know in my heart that she has many, many more years (afterall, she is only 8!). I continue to use the guardian mask if I take Farletta out to hand walk/graze or longe on a sunny day but I've yet to turn her out with it. I can sense her discomfort with the reduced vision (front and back) of the eye covers. I wonder if a similar item could be created with a full range of vision? I'm not comfortable turning her out with it because she can't see as well with it on. For now, we've continued to leave Farletta in until the sun goes down far enough to put her out with a fly mask on. I'm not sure what I'll do...hope to figure something out soon!
The eye looks clear today and the puffiness is gone. I'm not sure what was going on before but hopefully we are on the mend now.
So, Farletta has been on meds again for a few days but today I find her with puffy eyelids and a cloudy eye...just like a flare-up which is just starting...not one that is currently being treated. I gave her Atropine and NeoPolyDex (will be fourth dose for the day). I also gave her 750cc of Banamine which she will also receive in the morning...all other meds remain the same.
The eye looks cloudy today still and a little puffy. Maybe a tiny bit better but it's hard to tell. I don't know what to think...this has never happened before where the eye has actually gotten worse while being treated. What's going on?
